Freshly planted trees are watered during the first three years of their growth and development phases by the companies that planted the trees. This affects about 4,300 new trees that were planted from 2016 to 2019 and are under contractual care. In extreme weather conditions, it will be necessary to increase the irrigation of young trees in Leipzig. Currently, 678 trees are irrigated in areas close to the city centre, where temperatures are higher than in the outskirts of the city.
Irrigation bags in use
At present, around 1,000 irrigation bags are also being used in a test phase. They are used where normal irrigation is difficult, for example on embankments such as Antonienstrasse and at numerous specific sites. The experiences with this system have been predominantly good so far.
Citizens can help by pouring a bucket of water by the trees twice a day. This helps loosen the earth so the water can reach the roots. Every drop is crucial.
Even green areas such as perennial beds and summer flower planters need and receive additional watering. Comprehensive extra irrigation is not possible. Every water donation from residents for the public green areas of the residential area helps to counteract the drought stress of the trees.
New plantings take climate development into account
The staff concerned with the tree stock development in urban greenery and reforestation also take into account the fact that in future, species that are adapted to the local conditions and the predicted climatic conditions will be planted more frequently. These include species such as liquid amber, hop hornbeam and flowering ash.
